Since beginning work at Outside Magazine, I’ve developed a deep interest in the National Park Service. One of my editors, recognizing this, tipped me off to a story she thought might warrant some investigation—how big a deal was this Make-A-Wish event?
After interviewing half a dozen people involved in the planning and execution of the wish, and those the wish was intended to benefit, I realized that the benefit was universal and the deal was pretty darn big. For an eight-year-old with a life-threatening disease, it meant the world—and showed me that living with disability might limit one aspect of someone’s life, but encourage strength in others.
